Locked In
I believe that the ability to laugh at oneself is fundamental to the resiliency of the human spirit.
~Jill Conner Browne
At 8:00 in the morning, I was in my two-year-old granddaughterâs room getting her ready to come to my house to be taken care of for the day. My daughter Megi had an early morning meeting and a very long day of teaching ahead, and would not be back for ten hours or so. So, granddaughter Maci and I were in for a fun but very long day together. A cat named Cheeto and a Chihuahua named Snickers were also in the room with us that fateful day. I am not particularly fond of cats, but Cheeto is okay as far as cats go. And I canât resist a three-legged Chihuahua. (Can anyone?)
It was a freezing day with temperatures around zero degrees. My plans were to bring Maci to my home, give her a nice breakfast, work on the potty training, read books, color some pages, and maybe paint a little picture or two. I also hoped a long nap would be part of the day. But this was not to happen anytime soon, much to my dismay.
We were in Maciâs room getting her dressed, her hair combed, and her big-girl panties on. She had recently graduated out of diapers but was at the stage when she needed to go to the bathroom every hour or so. No worries because Grandma Ginny could take her to the potty several times a day.
Then, all of a sudden, I heard, Slam! Playing around, Maci had closed the door to her room. My daughter had warned me not to let the door close tightly because the door was not working properly.
Because Maciâs bedroom had been rented out to a tenant before Maci came along, there was a bolt lock on the door. That bolt lock was locked, and the key to open it was inserted in the keyhole on the other side of the door. As I scrutinized the door, I realized that I was locked in the bedroom with no way to get out. There was no lever to turn, no lock to unbolt, nothing!
I was not alone, however. I was accompanied by my granddaughter saying she had to go potty right now, a scared three-legged Chihuahua, and a cat wanting to get out of there, too.
Since I am a take-control type of person, I did not panic right away. I thought I would just call my daughter to come get us out. Then I realized my cellphone was down on the first floor. It was nowhere near this second-floor bedroom.
Another thought came to me. Perhaps I could somehow put a credit card in the space between the door and lock. But that wonât work with a deadbolt, and I didnât have a credit card with me. It was also on the first floor. However, I did find a few pages of a coloring book I had ripped out. I put them together and tried to stick them in the door by the lock.
